Antenatal Care

Falling pregnant is an exciting and wonderful time, but it requires a specialised level of care to help monitor and maintain your and your baby's health. This care is referred to as antenatal or pregnancy care.

Dr Deon van Zyl provides antenatal care to women while pregnant and during the birthing process. He has helped many women have successful pregnancies and shares your immense joy at bringing new life into the world.

What does antenatal care involve?

Antenatal care involves a series of appointments at various pregnancy milestones to monitor the progress and development of your baby while keeping an eye out for any complications.

During your antenatal visits, Dr van Zyl will:

  • Check your and your baby's health and vitals
  • Perform screenings for potential risks or conditions
  • Inform you on how to maintain your and your baby's health
  • Explain the changes that are occurring
  • Help you plan your delivery and discuss options with you
  • Answer any questions you may have

How often will I visit?

Your first appointment will take place at 8-10 weeks pregnant. This is your first official antenatal appointment, and where Dr van Zyl will outline your follow-up appointments and what to expect at each visit.

Your following appointments will take place at specific checkpoints in your pregnancy:

  • Weeks 11-13
  • Weeks 16-18
  • Weeks 20-22
  • Weeks 30-40

Your delivery will occur at week 41 or earlier, as your chances of needing a caesarean section increase after this.

What happens during antenatal care visits?

Each appointment will be slightly different as you advance in your pregnancy. Typically, the appointments will start with discussing how you have been feeling, any symptoms you have experienced and other noticeable changes.

This is followed by scans, tests and exams, including:

  • Blood pressure tests
  • Urine tests
  • Ultrasounds
  • Maternal risk assessments

These tests help Dr van Zyl pick up on any issues with you or your baby and if your baby has an increased risk of developing a congenital disorder.

Can I bring someone with me to my appointments?

Of course! You are welcome to bring your partner or a loved one to your antenatal visits. Of course, Dr van Zyl will provide you with the utmost support and care, but having someone who can drive you and share in your joy is always beneficial.
